He asked to be either moved to another wing or released, saying he faces threats and attacks from fellow inmates. Two other people are charged in the same case, one of whom is already a convicted Central Prison inmate. The 20-year-old made his complaints during yesterday’s hearing, at which the case’s first trial date was postponed after no legal representative appeared for any of the three defendants. The Prosecution asked that all three remain in custody until the next hearing, set for mid-September, noting that the detention order issued at the time of committal has not been appealed. Addressing the court, the 20-year-old, the second defendant in the case, said he faces serious problems at Central Prison. “Some of my fellow inmates threaten me, they hit us, and when we go back they’ll be waiting to hit us again,” he said. He alleged that some inmates carry knives, that prison guards are aware of this, and that police cannot protect them. He said he has been assaulted seven times, and that the first defendant, also 20, has been assaulted as well. The 20-year-old asked the court to either release him or order his transfer to another wing. The court, considering the request in light of the detention order already issued at committal, which has not been appealed, found that no new evidence had been presented to it that would alter the detention order. Regarding the 20-year-old’s allegations, the court said it expected police and prison authorities to take the necessary steps to investigate his claims. It told him to contact his lawyer and inform her of what he had told the court, noting that she was familiar with the relevant procedures and could act to have his claims investigated, and clarified that this was a matter outside the court’s jurisdiction.
