**46 Beaches and Two Marinas in Cyprus Awarded Blue Flag Status**
Cyprus has achieved recognition for its commitment to coastal quality and sustainable management, with 46 beaches and two marinas currently flying the prestigious Blue Flag. This accolade, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), reflects adherence to stringent environmental and safety criteria, as reported by the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (Cymepa) on Friday.
The Blue Flag program, which operates in over 50 countries, emphasizes the importance of maintaining excellent bathing water quality, effective environmental management, safety, and the provision of essential services. Additionally, it promotes environmental education and the sustainable management of coastal areas.
In Cyprus, the distribution of these awarded beaches is notable. The majority, 27 beaches, are located in the Famagusta region, while three are situated in both Larnaca and Limassol, and 13 in Paphos. The two marinas that have received the Blue Flag status are Limassol Marina and Ayia Napa Marina, both of which are recognized for their adherence to the program's rigorous standards.
A significant aspect of the Blue Flag initiative in Cyprus is its focus on accessibility. Cymepa has highlighted that at least one beach in each municipality is required to provide facilities and access for individuals with disabilities. Out of the 46 awarded beaches, 25 are equipped with special infrastructure designed to assist those with mobility challenges, ensuring safe access to the sea.
The breakdown of accessible beaches is as follows: 16 in Famagusta, three in Larnaca, two in Limassol, and four in Paphos. Notably, eight of these beaches are outfitted with the Seatrac system, which facilitates autonomous access to the water for individuals with mobility difficulties.
