**52 Killed in Nigeria Boat Disaster**
At least 52 individuals lost their lives in a tragic boat accident in Sokoto State, Nigeria, after an overloaded vessel capsized while transporting farm workers. The incident occurred on Thursday near Gorau town in the Goronyo local government area, as confirmed by local officials and residents.
The boat was reportedly carrying more than 80 passengers, primarily composed of farm owners and laborers who were en route to their fields for work. Abdulkadir Yusuf, the Sokoto State manager for the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), provided details about the accident to the Associated Press, highlighting the high number of individuals on board.
Initial estimates regarding the number of passengers varied, with some residents suggesting that the boat may have held as many as 70 to 57 people. In the aftermath of the capsizing, Sokoto state lawmaker Nasiru Adamu reported that 16 survivors had been rescued from the water.
Local resident Samaila Garba recounted his experience, stating that he had personally counted at least 42 bodies recovered from the scene, most of whom were women and children. "You know, during the rainy season, most women and children go to the farm to work," he explained, underscoring the common practice in the region.
Aminu Dan Hajiya, another resident of Gorau, shared that he frequently uses the same waterway to access his farm, indicating that the community as a whole has been deeply affected by the tragedy. "In fact, almost every household in the community has been affected," he noted.
Boat accidents are a recurrent issue in Nigeria, often attributed to overloading and inadequate safety measures. This incident follows a similar disaster in June, where 11 people died when a wooden passenger boat capsized on the Benue River near Makurdi amid heavy rain and strong winds.
The recent tragedy in Sokoto State also comes on the heels of another significant boat disaster in Africa. On August 11, a ferry carrying approximately 180 passengers and cargo capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba, resulting in at least 94 fatalities, as reported by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
As the investigation into the Sokoto boat disaster continues, officials are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the vessel's capacity and safety compliance. The loss of life in such incidents raises ongoing concerns about maritime safety practices in Nigeria and the need for stricter regulations to prevent future tragedies.
