The crash occurred at around 11.30 am, with police investigating the exact circumstances that led to the fatal collision. According to Limassol Traffic Police, the elderly man was not wearing a seat belt, a detail confirmed by first responders who arrived at the scene. The exact causes of his death will be determined during a post-mortem examination. Image Limassol Traffic Police chief Marios Charalambous said the 80-year-old had, for reasons that remain unknown, stopped his vehicle on the hard shoulder of the motorway while travelling from Limassol towards Paphos, after the Avdimou exit. At some point, he attempted to re-enter the motorway. Under circumstances being investigated, a vehicle travelling in the same direction towards Paphos collided with his car, causing a serious crash. The elderly man became trapped inside his vehicle and the Fire Service was called to assist with his extrication. He was then taken by ambulance to Limassol General Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death despite efforts to save him. A couple from Paphos was travelling in the second vehicle. Both were injured and taken to hospital for medical checks. Initial information indicates that the woman, who was the passenger, suffered more serious injuries, while her husband, who was driving, sustained lighter injuries. Their condition is not considered to be a cause for concern. Charalambous said the fact that the 80-year-old was not wearing a seat belt had been confirmed by first responders at the scene, while the nature of the injuries he sustained will be established during the post-mortem examination.
