Walking is another solitary activity, just like writing. And just as creative, I might say. It’s a shame I can’t write while walking. I suppose I’d have more productive thoughts that way, since when you walk, you see and hear real life around you rather than the virtual world of the computer. Walking through the city so early in the morning, I didn’t see anyone else walking, except for those who were taking their dogs out for a walk. The rest were drivers or passengers in vehicles—fleeting figures trapped inside that “package” of wheels, sheet metal, and engines that vanished down the street after just a brief glance. I realise that a pedestrian’s perspective is different from that of a driver—it’s more… down-to-earth, more steady, more realistic, more reliable. It picks up on the details and nuances that escape the driver. Walking a few kilometers on an actual street isn’t the same as walking on a treadmill at the gym, where all you have in front of you are TV screens. As you walk through the city’s neighborhoods, you see people clearly and slowly, just as they move toward and away from you, in time with your own steps—you don’t rush past them indifferently, as you do behind the wheel. On my way back from the gym after two hours, my path crossed on the sidewalks of the wide boulevard and its side streets with young foreigners from Asian and Middle Eastern countries who have nothing but their own two feet to carry them toward the future they seek. They walk or sit side by side on the low curbs in the shade of the trees and at the bus stops, talking endlessly on their cell phones, but also observing their surroundings intently, from that strange vantage point of the unnoticed observer who watches life unfold around him, with no hope that others will let him participate. I felt what it means to have only yourself, to shoulder that burden every morning and carry it forward as the sun rises higher in the sky. I recommend, dear reader, that you take this… walking meditation to heart—it clears the fog from your mind and makes it clear to you that without the… armor of your car and all your other material possessions, you’re not… all that different from the less privileged of this world—the strangers and the lost souls.
