Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers tracking the kidnapping of Shahruar Ahmed Emon secured evidence against a 22-year-old foreign national, who was arrested on Sunday. Under interrogation, the suspect admitted his involvement and directed police to a specific location near the Kofinou migrant reception centre and a local slaughterhouse, where the body was uncovered. Forensic teams have cordoned off the area to conduct a detailed scene examination. The investigation began after Emon failed to return to his shared home in Oroklini on 12 June. He had left the residence at 18:30 that evening, stating he was heading to a nearby factory in Kofinou for his first day of work. Although he sent a digital location pin to a friend later that night, his phone signal went dead shortly afterwards. The case escalated significantly when unidentified individuals contacted the student’s father in Greece to demand a ransom. This extortion attempt was further exposed 48 hours prior to Sunday’s arrest, when explicit ransom messages surfaced on social media platforms. The digital posts demanded €10,000 on Sunday followed by an additional €25,000 on Monday, warning that the recipient would “never see his face again” if the authorities were notified. Police, who had circulated Emon’s photograph three days after his disappearance, are currently working to verify the authenticity of the online messages as they build their case.
