**Air Traffic Control Issue Disrupts Departing Flights at Major UK Airports**
On Tuesday, several major British airports experienced disruptions in departing flights due to a technical issue with the air traffic control provider, NATS (National Air Traffic Services). The airports affected included Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Stansted, all of which reported restrictions and delays in flight operations.
NATS confirmed the issue in a post on social media platform X, stating, “We are investigating a technical issue which is causing some disruption to flight departures. Our engineers are on site and we will provide an update as soon as we can.” The organization is currently working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible, with Heathrow Airport, the largest in the UK, collaborating closely with NATS to mitigate the impact on travelers.
In addition to the airports in England, Edinburgh Airport indicated that it might also be affected by the ongoing issue, while Dublin Airport in Ireland reported that flights there were experiencing disruptions as well. Flight tracking website Flightradar24 noted that both arrivals and departures were being heavily regulated in the London flight information region due to the technical difficulties.
This incident is not the first time that NATS has faced challenges with its air traffic control systems. In 2024, the UK’s aviation regulator mandated that NATS review its contingency plans for outages after a malfunction in the automatic processing of flight plans caused widespread chaos across the country’s airports. That previous incident resulted in significant financial losses for airlines, totaling over £100 million ($135.49 million) in refunds and compensation to affected passengers.
Moreover, a radar-related technical issue in July of last year led to a disruption of flights for more than four hours at several major airports, including Heathrow. The recurrence of such technical problems raises concerns about the reliability of the air traffic control systems in the UK and their ability to handle operational challenges effectively.
