**American Pride Takes a Hit – Poll**
A recent Gallup poll has revealed that national pride among Americans has reached its lowest point in over two decades. The survey, released on Monday, coincides with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States' independence, highlighting a significant shift in sentiment as the nation prepares for this milestone.
According to the poll, only 58% of U.S. adults reported feeling “extremely” or “very” proud to be American, marking the lowest level since Gallup began tracking this sentiment in 2001. This decline is particularly notable as it represents an eight-point drop from the previous year. Additionally, 22% of respondents indicated they were “moderately proud,” while 15% expressed they were “only a little proud,” and 9% stated they were “not at all proud.”
The poll indicates that the decline in national pride is largely influenced by increasing partisan divisions. Among Republicans, a substantial 70% reported being “extremely proud” to be American. In contrast, only 28% of independents and a mere 14% of Democrats expressed the same level of pride. The gap between Republicans and Democrats, at 56 percentage points, remains nearly unchanged from last year's record 57-point divide.
Generational differences also emerged in the survey results. Among younger adults aged 18 to 34, the percentage identifying as “extremely proud” fell by 10 points to 14%. Similarly, those aged 35 to 54 saw a decline of 12 points, with only 30% expressing high levels of pride. In contrast, the sentiment among Americans aged 55 and older remained relatively stable, with 48% identifying as “extremely proud,” a figure that has not seen significant change from the previous year.
The Gallup poll was conducted from June 1 to June 15, 2023, and involved a random sample of 1,001 adults from across the United States. As the nation approaches a significant anniversary, these findings may prompt discussions about the evolving nature of American identity and the factors influencing national pride.
As the U.S. prepares to celebrate its 250th year of independence, the results of this poll could serve as a reflection of the current political and social climate, potentially impacting how the anniversary is observed and celebrated across the country.
