Kimi Antonelli secured a commanding victory at the Belgian Grand Prix held at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday, further extending his lead in the Formula One championship to 45 points over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. This win marks Antonelli's sixth triumph in just ten races this season, solidifying his position as the frontrunner in the championship race.
The race began with a dramatic turn of events as Antonelli's teammate, George Russell, collided with Hamilton on the opening lap. Russell, who started in third position, experienced a significant setback when he spun off into the gravel after the incident. The collision occurred as Russell attempted to regain ground after losing positions on the straight. He described the situation as frustrating, stating that a battery issue hindered his car's performance, leaving him without power as he approached Eau Rouge.
"I made a great first corner and was right behind Max Verstappen, but for whatever reason, the battery decided not to recharge at Turn One," Russell explained. "I exited the first corner 35% down because of that, and it didn’t charge. I had a boost problem, and quite frankly, it was dangerous. I got swamped by three cars and shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place."
Following the collision, Russell exited his car and walked away from the scene, while Hamilton continued racing. The incident prompted a safety car deployment, and stewards later reviewed the situation, ultimately issuing Hamilton a five-second penalty for causing the collision.
Despite the setback for Russell, the race continued with Antonelli in the lead, showcasing his driving prowess.
