**Apple Unveils Foldable iPhone Duo at $1,999, Marking a Significant Shift in Smartphone Design**
*Cupertino, California – September 9, 2026* – In a highly anticipated event held at the Steve Jobs Theater, Apple introduced its latest flagship product, the iPhone Duo, a foldable smartphone priced at $1,999. This marks one of the most significant changes to the iPhone lineup since the removal of the physical home button in the iPhone X in 2017.
New Apple CEO John Ternus showcased the Duo, which is designed to resemble the size and shape of a passport, featuring rounded edges. When unfolded, the device reveals a horizontal 7.6-inch-wide screen that can also be viewed in a vertical orientation. A smaller display is located on the front of the device when it is folded, making it convenient for quick access to notifications and other essential features. According to Apple, the Duo is also its thinnest phone to date.
The launch event, which was Ternus's first as CEO, emphasized the Duo's potential as a productivity tool. Apple demonstrated how the device could facilitate Zoom calls with multiple participants and provide a broader view of the Slack messaging app. The larger screen allows for multiple app windows to be open simultaneously, aligning with Apple's focus on enhancing productivity, similar to features found in some of its iPad models.
Ternus was critical of existing foldable phones, describing them as "awkward" and poorly suited for common tasks such as scrolling and video viewing. He asserted that the Duo was engineered to deliver an iPad-like experience in a pocket-sized device, thanks to a custom hinge, dual displays with a consistent aspect ratio, and a new titanium body. "It’s entirely new and at the same time remarkably familiar," he stated, highlighting the device's comfortable one-handed usability.
In addition to its innovative design, Apple is positioning the iPhone Duo as a personal AI hub that prioritizes user privacy. Ternus emphasized that while many competitors collect and store user data, Apple’s approach is to ensure that "Apple Intelligence runs on device whenever it can," allowing users greater control over their personal information.
The event also featured updates on the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, which will start at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. These models promise improvements in battery life, camera capabilities, and overall performance. Pre-orders for these devices will begin on September 12, with availability set for September 18. The iPhone Duo, however, will not be available until October 23.
Despite the excitement surrounding the Duo, Apple enters a competitive market where rivals such as Samsung, Motorola, and Google have already launched their own foldable smartphones. Analysts note that Apple’s strategy typically involves waiting until new technologies have matured before entering the market. Dipanjan Chatterjee, an analyst at Forrester, commented, "The foldable launch is straight out of Apple’s playbook: Wait for the product to work out its kinks and for the market to offer glimpses of viability, then enter and shape the category."
The introduction of the iPhone Duo signals Apple's ambition to expand into a new segment of the smartphone market, which has thus far represented a small share of overall sales. As the tech giant seeks to redefine the foldable phone experience, industry observers will be watching closely to see if the Duo can capture consumer interest and carve out a meaningful niche in the competitive landscape.
With the iPhone Duo, Apple aims to blend innovation with user-centric design, potentially setting a new standard for foldable smartphones in the years to come.
