**Aristotelous Seeks Immediate Appointment as Director-General Following Court Ruling**
Anna Aristotelous has formally requested her immediate appointment to a permanent director-general position, effective December 1, 2025. This request follows a recent ruling by the administrative court that annulled her suspension from duty, which had been in place since December 5, 2025.
In a letter addressed to the cabinet on July 2, 2026, Aristotelous’ legal representative, Christos Triantafyllides, highlighted the court's decision made on June 17, 2026, which overturned the previous suspension order. According to the correspondence, Aristotelous had accepted the role of director-general, but has not yet been assigned to a permanent position that would allow her to fulfill the responsibilities associated with the role.
Triantafyllides urged the cabinet to act promptly in facilitating Aristotelous' placement in the permanent position, requesting that this be done retroactively to the date of her initial appointment. He emphasized the need for immediate action in light of the court's ruling.
However, the situation remains complicated. During an extraordinary cabinet meeting held on June 22, the government decided to recommend to the Public Service Commission that Aristotelous be suspended once more. This decision comes amidst an ongoing investigation that began in early April 2025, concerning allegations of misconduct linked to the prison system.
The investigation was initiated when police conducted a search at the residence of a prison warden, as part of a broader inquiry into an alleged scam involving a convict who was reportedly purchasing items from the prison canteen and reselling them to fellow inmates at inflated prices. During this search, law enforcement officials seized approximately 300,000 pages of documents classified as “confidential” and “secret.” These documents are believed to have been unlawfully removed from the prison facilities during Aristotelous' tenure as prison director, specifically between November and December 2022.
As the legal and administrative proceedings continue, the future of Aristotelous in the director-general role remains uncertain. The cabinet's recommendation to suspend her again indicates that the investigation's findings may further influence her professional standing and the decisions made regarding her appointment.
The developments surrounding Anna Aristotelous highlight the complexities of administrative governance in Cyprus, particularly in relation to public service positions and the implications of legal rulings on employment status. The outcome of the ongoing investigation and the cabinet's actions will be closely monitored by both the public and stakeholders within the government.
