Fire crews and bulldozers are now working to fully contain the burnt area, Kettis said. The fire burned a total of around 3.5 hectares. A winery and a holiday home were protected during the firefighting operation. The Fire Service said three crewed fire engines from Limassol’s rural stations and three hired bulldozers responded initially, along with five firefighting aircraft. The Department of Forests, the Game and Fauna Service and organised volunteer groups were also mobilised, with the Department of Forests supporting the operation with six fire engines and a large water tanker, coordinated by the Regional Forest Officer for Troodos. The Chief Fire Officer oversaw the response from the Fire Service’s Operations Coordination Centre. Twenty-one Greek forest firefighters, currently in Cyprus under the European Union’s pre-positioning programme for firefighting forces, also assisted at the scene. It was the first real fire the Greek mission had responded to during its fortnight-long stay in Cyprus, which is due to end on September 16, 2026.
