**At Least Five Killed in Russian Drone Strike Near Ukraine Front Line**
Ukrainian officials reported that a Russian drone strike targeting a bus near the front line in southern Ukraine resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals and left seven others injured. The attack occurred on Wednesday in the vicinity of Nikopol, as confirmed by Dnipropetrovsk region governor Oleksandr Hanzha via the Telegram messaging app.
Nikopol is strategically located across the Dnipro River from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since the early days of the ongoing conflict. Eyewitness accounts and images shared by Ukrainian authorities depicted a white minibus with shattered windows and bloodstains, underscoring the severity of the incident. Mykola Lukashuk, head of the Dnipropetrovsk region council, condemned the attack, stating, "Russians cynically struck a passenger bus. They targeted a minibus which carried people going about their daily business."
As of now, there has been no immediate response from Russian officials regarding the drone strike. The incident contributes to a troubling trend, as the number of civilian casualties in Ukraine has surged in 2026. According to the United Nations, at least 1,396 civilians were killed and 7,978 others injured in Ukraine during the first half of this year, marking a 37 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025.
In contrast, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that approximately 250 civilians were killed and 1,596 injured in Ukrainian attacks within Russia during the same timeframe, indicating a staggering 121 percent rise in civilian casualties in Russia compared to the previous year. Both Ukraine and Russia maintain that they do not intentionally target civilians amid the ongoing conflict, which escalated significantly following Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
In addition to the drone strike in Nikopol, other incidents of violence were reported across Ukraine on Wednesday. An explosion was heard in the capital city of Kyiv, with local authorities confirming that a Russian strike had ignited a fire at a warehouse. Furthermore, regional governor Vitalii Diakivnych reported that Russian forces had targeted energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s central region of Poltava overnight, although specific details were not disclosed. A Russian drone also struck an unspecified industrial facility in the same region.
In a separate development, Russia's Defence Ministry announced that it had successfully targeted a cargo vessel in Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Chornomorsk, located in the Odesa region. This attack is part of a broader pattern of strikes that have intensified in recent weeks, as both sides continue to engage in hostilities.
