Hundreds applied and the acceptance rate settled at 20 per cent after what the university described as a thorough and demanding evaluation, with places awarded on strict criteria of quality and academic standing. Its other academic units are working through their own applications with a similarly selective approach, the university said. They are the Department of Primary Education, the Department of Business Administration, the Department of Economics, the Department of Psychology, the Department of Nursing, and the English-language Department of Classics covering the archaeology, history and literature of ancient Greece. Teaching staff and facilities The academics teaching at the branch are the same ones who teach in the corresponding departments and schools in Athens, the university said. Calls have already gone out to attract senior academics who would be based exclusively at the branch. The facilities and laboratories are finished and fitted with current technology, according to the announcement, and sit in the heart of old Nicosia. Housing and meals Working with local bodies and Nicosia Municipality, the university says it has secured access to newly built student halls on favourable financial terms, so that finding accommodation does not become an extra obstacle for students and their families. Arrangements have also been made for student meals on favourable terms. The university describes the branch as the most significant step towards internationalisation in the history of Greece’s public universities.
