**Austria Makes First Donation to Missing Persons Committee in Cyprus**
In a significant gesture of support, Austria has made its inaugural financial contribution to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in Cyprus, donating €20,000. This donation, received on June 12, is intended to bolster the committee's ongoing efforts to identify and return the remains of individuals who have been missing for decades, providing much-needed closure to their families.
The CMP, established in 1981, is a bicommunal organization formed by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, with the involvement of the United Nations. Its primary mandate is to recover, identify, and return the remains of a total of 2,002 missing persons—comprising 1,510 Greek Cypriots and 492 Turkish Cypriots—who disappeared during the tumultuous periods of 1963-64 and 1974, as well as during the intervening years.
As of now, the CMP has successfully identified and returned the remains of 1,069 missing persons to their families, a crucial step in addressing the long-standing uncertainties faced by those affected. The donation from Austria will support the CMP's work through 2026, allowing the committee to continue its vital mission.
The CMP's exhumation and identification project became operational in 2006, with the European Union serving as the primary financial contributor. The committee is composed of three members appointed by the respective communities and the United Nations, ensuring a collaborative approach to this sensitive issue. The CMP employs a bicommunal forensic team of over 60 Cypriot archaeologists, anthropologists, and geneticists who conduct excavations and laboratory analyses throughout the island.
Importantly, the CMP does not seek to determine the cause of death or assign responsibility for the disappearances, focusing instead on its humanitarian role of providing closure to the families of the missing. This approach underscores the committee's commitment to reconciliation and healing in a region still affected by its past conflicts.
