**Awareness Campaign Targets Fatty Liver Disease in Cyprus**
In a significant initiative to combat fatty liver disease, the Cyprus Liver Patients Association, known as Prometheus, announced on Thursday the launch of a nationwide awareness campaign and free screening programs. This announcement coincides with World Fatty Liver Day, underscoring the urgency of addressing this growing health concern.
Prometheus emphasized the importance of early diagnosis in managing liver health, stating, “Through modern, non-invasive tests and targeted awareness campaigns, we seek to ensure the early diagnosis of liver disease.” The organization highlighted that fatty liver disease is not just a local issue but a major global health challenge, with projections indicating that approximately 357 million individuals worldwide could be living with the condition by 2030.
In May, Prometheus conducted free liver health screenings over a three-day period as part of the European Liver Screening Campaign 2026. The association reported a “high turnout and strong interest” during this event, which they described as “just the beginning of a broader effort” to raise awareness and facilitate early detection of liver diseases.
Fatty liver disease, characterized by the accumulation of fat in liver cells, can lead to severe health complications if left untreated. Prometheus warned that the condition could progress to liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. In extreme cases, individuals may require a liver transplant to address the damage caused by the disease.
To mitigate the risk of developing fatty liver disease, Prometheus advocates for lifestyle changes that include maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, managing weight, and undergoing routine medical check-ups. These preventive measures are essential for fostering better liver health and reducing the prevalence of fatty liver disease in the community.
