**Back-to-School Shopping Brings Huge Price Gaps in Cyprus**
As the new school year approaches, parents in Cyprus are facing significant disparities in the prices of school supplies. A recent survey conducted by the Cyprus Consumers’ Association revealed that prices for essential items can vary dramatically, with school bags alone ranging from as low as €1.89 to nearly €210.
The association has urged families to approach their back-to-school shopping with caution, emphasizing the importance of careful planning and price comparison. Parents are advised to resist the influence of advertising, particularly when it comes to branded products, which often carry a premium price tag.
The survey, which included both online and physical store assessments across ten different businesses with outlets throughout Cyprus, found that while overall prices for school supplies have remained relatively stable compared to 2025, some categories did experience minor fluctuations. Notably, the price of school bags exhibited one of the widest gaps, varying significantly based on size, design, and brand.
Other school supplies also showed considerable price differences. For instance, pencil cases were priced between €0.48 and €45.55, while basic stationery items such as pencils, pens, and markers ranged from €0.20 to €18.99. Notebooks, including both 50-sheet and 100-sheet varieties, as well as two-subject spiral notebooks, were available for prices between €0.32 and €12.99. Filing folders showed a similar range, with prices varying from €0.19 to €8.48.
The survey also highlighted substantial differences in school clothing prices. School jerseys and shirts, including promotional items, were priced between €3.99 and €48. Trousers ranged from €12 to €27, while skirts were priced between €11.50 and €25.
In light of these findings, the Cyprus Consumers’ Association emphasized the opportunity for parents to educate their children about making informed purchasing decisions. They suggested that families prepare a shopping list that includes only the necessary items for the school year. This approach can help children distinguish between what they genuinely need and what they might desire based on marketing influences.
Additionally, the association encouraged consumers to not only compare prices but also to assess the quality of products to ensure they are age-appropriate. For health and safety reasons, parents are advised to discourage younger children from selecting stationery that resembles food or has food-like scents. When choosing a school bag, considerations should extend beyond aesthetics; factors such as the bag's weight and construction should be prioritized to accommodate the physical strength of the student.
For those shopping in physical stores, the association recommended checking the retailer's return policy before making a purchase. It is important to note that retailers are not legally required to accept returns or exchanges if customers change their minds, so understanding each store's policy can prevent potential issues.
