**‘Behind Every Safe Flight’: National Guard Declares 2026 the ‘Year of Maintenance’**
In a significant move aimed at enhancing military aviation safety and operational readiness, the National Guard of Cyprus has declared 2026 the “Year of Maintenance.” This announcement was made by Lieutenant General Emmanouel Theodorou during an aviation conference held at the Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos on Thursday.
Theodorou emphasized the critical role of maintenance in military strength, stating that the effectiveness of advanced weapons systems and equipment relies heavily on their reliability and operational status, which is ensured through continuous, high-quality maintenance. “Behind every safe flight lies the daily effort of engineers and technicians, who work with a high sense of responsibility, professionalism, and expertise,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of the personnel tasked with maintaining aviation assets.
The initiative to designate 2026 as the “Year of Maintenance” is intended to foster a culture of technical excellence within the National Guard. Theodorou highlighted that this focus on maintenance is essential for sustaining operational readiness, which is a cornerstone of military effectiveness. He noted that the Aviation Command has made considerable strides in airworthiness, aligning its maintenance procedures with modern international standards.
The conference, titled “Strategic Integration of the Airworthiness Regulatory Framework into Aircraft Maintenance and Operations,” was organized by the Aviation Command and attended by senior National Guard officers, academics, and experts from both Cyprus and abroad. The event aimed to address current challenges and advancements in airworthiness and aircraft maintenance, as well as the implementation of European military standards designed to enhance aviation safety.
Brigadier (Pilot) Alexandros Georgiou, chief of the Aviation Command, also addressed the attendees, highlighting the importance of personnel dedication and professionalism in ensuring the reliability of air assets. He stated that air power is not solely a product of advanced technology but is fundamentally dependent on the skilled workforce responsible for maintenance.
Georgiou pointed out that as aviation systems grow increasingly complex and operational demands evolve, continuous training and adaptability are vital for maintaining high levels of technical competence. He stressed that maintenance is intrinsically linked to risk management and sound decision-making, with each technical inspection and maintenance procedure contributing to the overarching goal of safeguarding human life and mission success.
A key aspect of Georgiou's address was the adoption of the European Military Airworthiness Requirements (EMAR) by the Cyprus Air Force. By aligning maintenance, certification, and continuing airworthiness practices with recognized military standards across Europe, the Cyprus Air Force aims to enhance flight safety, operational reliability, and transparency.
