**Blaze in India Study Center Leaves at Least 14 Dead**
A tragic fire broke out in a commercial building in the Aliganj neighborhood of Lucknow, northern India, on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 individuals, most of whom were students. The incident has raised concerns over safety regulations in commercial establishments.
The fire erupted in a multi-story building that housed a variety of businesses, including a pet shop, a veterinary clinic on the lower floors, and an animation studio along with a study center on the upper levels. Eyewitness accounts and local media reports indicate that the blaze spread rapidly, trapping many inside.
Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Brajesh Pathak, confirmed the grim toll of the incident, stating that 14 bodies have been recovered from the site. Additionally, ten individuals have been hospitalized, receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the fire. Reports suggest that several others were injured as well, although the exact number remains unclear.
Rescue operations were promptly initiated by local authorities, including the fire department and police. Firefighters faced significant challenges as thick smoke engulfed the building, hampering their efforts to reach those trapped inside. To facilitate rescue operations, firefighters had to break open a wall to gain access to the upper floors. Exhaust fans were deployed to help clear the smoke and improve visibility.
Disturbing footage from the scene showed desperate individuals attempting to escape the flames. Some were seen using makeshift ropes to lower themselves to safety, while others were caught in precarious situations, with one person reportedly falling from the first floor during an escape attempt. This individual was later hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the fall.
In addition to human casualties, some animals from the pet clinic were also rescued and reported to be injured, highlighting the broader impact of the fire on the local community.
As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "Anguished by the loss of lives in a fire mishap in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. My condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest." He also announced that cash assistance would be provided to the families of the victims and those affected by the blaze.
The incident has sparked discussions about fire safety regulations and emergency preparedness in commercial buildings across India, particularly those that cater to vulnerable populations such as students. As the community mourns the loss of life, calls for improved safety measures are likely to intensify in the wake of this devastating tragedy.
