Tyler was placed in an induced coma in May after emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal. Her spokesperson said last month that she had come out of the coma but remained critically ill in intensive care. Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler grew up in a council house in Neath and developed a love of music from a young age, carrying records to her aunt’s house to play with her cousins. She spent seven years performing at rugby and working men’s clubs before talent scout Roger Bell discovered her at a Swansea club and connected her with songwriters looking for a singer. Her first single, Lost in France, came out in 1977 and led to an appearance on Top of the Pops. She later signed to RCA, the label that also represented Elvis Presley, which suggested she drop her earlier stage name in favour of one that would become instantly recognisable worldwide. Total Eclipse of the Heart followed five years after her debut single and transformed her career. Written by Jim Steinman, the song spent two weeks at number one in the UK and four weeks at the top of the US charts, despite radio stations cutting the original eight-minute version down to around four minutes. This year, the track passed a billion streams on Spotify, and its music video has been watched more than 1.3 billion times on YouTube. Tyler went on to release a string of other hits, including Holding Out for a Hero, It’s a Heartache, Together and If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man). She received three Grammy nominations for best female vocal performance, and represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013. She was appointed MBE for services to music in the Queen’s final Birthday Honours list in 2022, receiving the award from Prince William the following year. In 2023, she published an autobiography, Straight from the Heart, reflecting on her journey from a shy child in Skewen to international stardom. “I did not think this would happen to a Gaynor from Skewen, you know,” she said. Tyler and her husband, Robert Sullivan, were reported to own 22 homes worldwide, though they mainly divided their time between Portugal and their home in Mumbles, Swansea. The couple did not have children; Tyler had previously spoken about suffering a miscarriage at 40, saying she had prioritised her career and left having a family too late.
