**Breslow Emphasizes U.S. Support for Cyprus Solution Following Meeting with Turkish Cypriot Leader**
United States Ambassador to Cyprus, John Breslow, reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to finding a resolution to the long-standing Cyprus issue during a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Tuesday. Breslow characterized the discussions as "fruitful," highlighting the importance of a collaborative approach to resolving the island's division.
"The United States remains steadfast in its support of a Cypriot-led, United Nations-facilitated solution to the island’s division," Breslow stated, underscoring the U.S. position on the matter. His remarks come at a critical time as the island continues to navigate complex political dynamics.
Erhurman, who described the meeting as "productive," noted that this engagement was significant as it was his last before departing for New York to participate in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. Earlier this year, reports indicated that the U.S. government expressed a positive outlook regarding Erhurman’s four-point proposal, which he believes are essential for restarting serious negotiations on the Cyprus issue. According to veteran journalist Ulas Baris, a high-ranking official from the U.S. State Department had previously communicated with Erhurman’s office, indicating appreciation for his methodology and a willingness to engage further.
Erhurman's four points include the recognition of political equality for the Greek Cypriot side, the establishment of time-limited negotiations, the preservation of all previous agreements, and a guarantee from the United Nations that any embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriots would be lifted should the Greek Cypriot side withdraw from negotiations again.
In the coming days, Erhurman is scheduled to meet with Maria Angela Holguin, the UN envoy for the Cyprus problem, on Thursday, followed by a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday.
