**British Couple Arrested for Smuggling Cigarettes at Paphos Airport**
Paphos, Cyprus – A British couple was apprehended by customs officials at Paphos Airport on Wednesday after a routine search of their luggage uncovered a substantial quantity of smuggled cigarettes. According to a statement released by the Customs Department on Thursday, the couple, aged 29 and 27, was preparing to board a flight to Bournemouth, United Kingdom, accompanied by their four-year-old child.
Customs officials became suspicious during the inspection of the couple's three pieces of luggage, which contained a total of 215 cartons of cigarettes, each carton holding 200 cigarettes. The cigarettes were identified as smuggled goods due to the absence of the required health warnings in Greek and Turkish, as well as the lack of a security feature or unique traceability code that is typically mandated for tobacco products in the European Union.
The couple's possession of these duty-free cigarettes raised significant legal concerns, as they had not been acquired through legal means and no taxes had been paid on them. The total of 43,000 cigarettes far exceeds the personal allowance for travelers entering the United Kingdom, which typically allows for a limited quantity of tobacco products to be brought in without incurring duties.
Following their arrest, the couple was released after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement of €12,900, which covers the fines associated with their illegal possession of the smuggled cigarettes. The customs officials confiscated both the couple's luggage and its contents as part of the legal proceedings.
In a related incident on the same day, the Customs Department reported the confiscation of pesticides from a Greek Cypriot driver at the Astromeritis-Zodias crossing point. During a routine inspection, officials discovered a 1,000-milliliter container of liquid pesticide and a 400-gram container of powdered pesticide. The pesticides were seized and will be destroyed in accordance with established procedures, as they are not permitted for personal transport across the border.
These incidents highlight ongoing efforts by Cypriot authorities to combat smuggling and enforce regulations regarding the transport of prohibited goods. The Customs Department continues to remind travelers of the importance of adhering to legal guidelines when carrying items across borders to avoid legal repercussions.
