**British Father Seeks to Halt Prosecution Over Son’s Fatal Hotel Fall**
A British father, 37, is currently facing charges related to the tragic death of his three-year-old son at a hotel in Paphos, Cyprus. The father has formally requested the attorney-general to suspend the criminal prosecution against him, according to his lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou.
The incident occurred while the family was on holiday, marking the first day of their trip. The father was reportedly playing with his son outside their fourth-floor hotel room when the tragedy unfolded. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether a window was inadvertently left open, allowing the child to slip from his father's arms and fall.
The father has been granted permission by the Paphos district court to return to the UK for his son's funeral, which took place last month. He is expected to return to Cyprus by September 14, adhering to the court's stipulations. Should he fail to return, authorities have indicated that a European arrest warrant would be sought. However, his lawyer emphasized that there is "no possibility" of the father not returning.
The case is scheduled to be heard again in Paphos district court on September 17, where the father was anticipated to enter a plea. However, Alexandrou stated that the defense would refrain from responding to the charges until they receive a response from the attorney-general regarding their request for suspension. "We are waiting to answer to the charges. If we do not have an answer from the attorney-general, we will not answer to the charges until the attorney-general responds to us," he explained.
In the wake of the tragedy, the family is reportedly experiencing significant emotional distress. Alexandrou noted that the father’s young daughter is particularly affected and wishes for her father to be close to her during this difficult time.
As part of the conditions set by the court, the father had to deposit an additional €10,000 cash guarantee to be allowed to return to the UK. Upon his return to Cyprus, he will be subject to previous restrictions, which include a €20,000 financial guarantee, the surrender of his travel documents, and weekly reporting to local police.
