**British Food Price Inflation Set to Rise Amid Global Challenges**
British food price inflation is projected to reach nearly 4 percent by the end of 2023, with expectations to exceed 6 percent by mid-2027. The forecast, released by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) on Wednesday, attributes these increases to a combination of global factors, including the ongoing US-Iran conflict, drought conditions across Europe, and the El Niño weather phenomenon.
The FDF's latest estimates indicate that prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages will be approximately 3.9 percent higher in December compared to the same month last year. This represents a significant reduction from earlier predictions, which had anticipated inflation rates nearing 10 percent. However, the FDF warns that food prices will continue to rise, with a peak forecast of 6.4 percent in July 2027.
Karen Betts, Chief Executive of the FDF, emphasized the challenges faced by food and drink manufacturers in maintaining price stability. "Food and drink manufacturers have kept food prices as low as possible during the energy shock since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, but they can’t do this indefinitely," she stated. Betts highlighted that persistently high costs associated with energy, logistics, and packaging, compounded by extreme weather conditions this summer, are key factors driving the anticipated price increases.
The FDF's report also noted that food inflation is expected to remain significantly above historical averages in the latter half of 2027. The organization indicated that while the peak inflation rate may be lower than previously forecasted, the duration of elevated prices is likely to be prolonged.
Data from the Office for National Statistics revealed that food and drink inflation fell to 1.3 percent in July, marking its lowest level since August 2024. Despite this decrease, overall consumer price inflation rose to 2.9 percent in the same month. The Bank of England (BoE) has projected that food price inflation will reach 3.5 percent by December, while overall consumer price inflation is expected to rise to 3.1 percent.
Since 2020, food and drink prices in the UK have surged nearly 40 percent, according to the FDF. In light of these rising costs, the FDF has urged the government to reconsider plans to restrict the marketing of foods deemed unhealthy. The organization argues that recent increases in payroll taxes, along with stricter advertising and packaging regulations, have added approximately £2 billion (around $2.7 billion) in costs to the industry last year.
