Owen, known for Closer, Children of Men and Gemini Man, is joined by an international cast including Alex Pettyfer, Reda Elazouar and Ronan Summers, alongside Jake Ryan, Mark Rhino Smith, Joey Ansah, Alex Cooke and Luke Bouchier. Copper Island said the production has one of the largest per-day budgets for a film made in Cyprus. Filming began on July 6 and will move to Bulgaria, where it is set to wrap by the end of the month. Copper Island founder Matt Murphie said: “We’re delighted to be producing Scorpion in Cyprus. We’d like to thank the Cyprus Film Commission for its support and the exceptional local crew helping bring this project to the screen.” Owen said: “Shooting Scorpion in Cyprus was a great experience. Copper Island created an outstanding production environment, the local crew were incredibly professional with a great attitude, and the island offers an amazing variety of locations. I hope I get the opportunity to come back and shoot more projects there.” In Scorpion, Jason, a young police officer played by Elazouar, joins an elite tactical unit of Afghanistan war veterans for his first assignment. A nighttime raid on a remote farmhouse turns into a trap: the squad is cut off from communication and sealed inside the building. A voice confronts them with an ultimatum, demanding a confession and threatening to kill someone every thirty minutes until one comes forward. As the deadline approaches, trust within the squad breaks down. The screenplay was written by Richard Hughes and Bennett Fisher. The film is produced by Murphie alongside David Mansfield and Luke Bouchier. WestEnd Films is handling international sales and will present early footage to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The studio’s other recent projects include The Leader, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, Dead Man’s Wire, directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Bill Skarsgård, Al Pacino and Colman Domingo, and Eden, directed by Ron Howard and starring Jude Law, Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney. Murphie is also an executive producer on the upcoming Anxious People, starring Angelina Jolie. Copper Island has also backed local productions, including Apart, directed by Stelana Kliris, which is seeking international distribution, and The Well, directed by Mario Piperides, which is completing post-production at the company’s Limassol facilities. Copper Island is headquartered in Limassol with a presence in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Australia. Its past collaborators include directors Ron Howard and Simon West, and actors including Sir Anthony Hopkins, Matthew Goode, Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl and Shia LaBeouf.
