**Buddhist Monk Arrested in Alleged $3 Million Embezzlement Case**
Thai police have apprehended a Buddhist monk, Phra Wachirayan Wi, on suspicion of embezzling approximately 100 million baht (around $3 million) from the Wat Phutthaisawan monastery in Ayutthaya, a historic city known for its ancient temples. The arrest, which occurred on Thursday, also involved a female accomplice, identified as Punyavee Rungrueang, who has been charged with aiding the monk in his alleged illegal activities.
Phra Wachirayan, a former abbot of the 14th-century temple, is accused of misappropriating donations intended for the monastery on over 20 occasions over a two-year period. This misconduct is particularly significant given that Buddhist monks in Thailand are expected to adhere to strict vows of celibacy and renounce material possessions. Following his arrest, Phra Wachirayan was defrocked, and he has not yet made any public statements regarding the allegations.
The investigation into Phra Wachirayan's activities reportedly began in mid-July after police received an anonymous tip suggesting misconduct related to temple funds. Authorities have since uncovered evidence indicating that the monk had issued donation receipts for two separate financial streams—one designated for temple renovations and the other for the sale of amulets and sacred objects. However, police stated that none of the funds from these streams were deposited into the temple's accounts.
During a raid on Phra Wachirayan's residence, police discovered cash and gold bars valued at more than 100 million baht. The investigation revealed that the monk had been filmed engaging in sexual acts with Punyavee in his home, which was captured on CCTV footage. Punyavee, 47, has been arrested and is suspected of assisting Phra Wachirayan in managing the embezzled funds, as significant amounts of money were reportedly funneled through her bank accounts annually.
The case has drawn attention to ongoing issues within Thailand's Buddhist community, which has faced scrutiny over various scandals involving monks, including violations of celibacy, drug trafficking, and financial misconduct. Last year, a notable scandal emerged involving multiple monks who were blackmailed by a woman after she recorded sexual encounters with them, leading to an extensive police investigation.
In response to the growing concerns about monk misconduct, Thai authorities established a hotline in July 2022 for the public to report inappropriate behavior among monks. The recent arrest of Phra Wachirayan and Punyavee highlights the continuing challenges faced by the Buddhist institution in Thailand, as it grapples with maintaining the integrity of its monastic community.
As the investigation unfolds, police have indicated that additional individuals may be implicated in the case, suggesting that the embezzlement scheme could involve a broader network of complicity. The public and media await further developments as the case progresses through the legal system.
