**Candidates Urge Aglandjia Residents to Participate in Byelection**
Aglandjia, Cyprus – In a bid to encourage voter turnout, the two candidates vying for the position of deputy mayor of Aglandjia, Andri Hadjiandreou and Prokopis Prokopiou, made a public appeal to residents on Sunday. Their calls came after both candidates cast their votes in the ongoing byelection, which was necessitated by the recent election of former deputy mayor Andreas Constantinou to the House of Representatives.
Hadjiandreou, who voted at the 6th Primary School of Aglandjia at 10:30 AM, expressed gratitude towards the electoral officials overseeing the voting process. She emphasized the importance of the election, stating, “the next day is the most important of all, because the point here is for Aglandjia to win.” She encouraged residents to participate in the electoral process, suggesting that despite the heat, there would be ample time to enjoy leisure activities after voting. “It may be hot, but the day is long. We can vote and go swim afterwards,” she remarked.
Prokopiou, who cast his ballot at the Pallouriotissa gymnasium at 11:00 AM, echoed Hadjiandreou's sentiments, highlighting the significance of the election for the community. “Today we are voting for the good of our Aglandjia,” he stated, urging residents to make their voices heard. He added that their collective effort should aim for a high turnout, as he envisions Aglandjia becoming “the jewel of the wider municipality of Nicosia again.”
As of noon, voter turnout was reported to be low, with only 15 percent of the 15,182 registered voters having participated in the election. Polling stations will remain open until 6 PM, with results expected to be announced at 8:30 PM.
The byelection is crucial for Aglandjia, as the new deputy mayor will play a significant role in local governance and community development. Both candidates are keen to demonstrate their commitment to the residents and the future of the municipality.
Voter engagement remains a key focus for both Hadjiandreou and Prokopiou, who are hopeful that more residents will take the opportunity to vote as the day progresses.
