**Ceuta Mayor Calls for Migrant Detention Amid Mass Influx Crisis**
Ceuta, Spain – The mayor of Ceuta, Juan Jesus Vivas, has called for the urgent establishment of a detention center for migrants and asylum seekers following a significant increase in their numbers in the Spanish North African territory. This demand comes in the wake of a mass crossing from Morocco that occurred at the end of July, which has raised concerns about the management of the external borders of the European Union.
In a press conference, Vivas, who leads the conservative Popular Party, emphasized the necessity of creating a facility to confine the thousands of undocumented migrants currently present in Ceuta. He stated, “A space that acts as an internment centre for foreigners must be set up, where these people can be held and remain confined.” The mayor argued that such measures are essential to ensure that migrants are not left roaming the streets and to facilitate the expulsion process.
The recent surge in migrants has been attributed to a mass border breach, with estimates suggesting that around 80,000 individuals crossed into Ceuta from Morocco. While the Spanish government reported that approximately 70,000 of these migrants were returned to Morocco within two days, a significant number remain in Ceuta. Vivas estimates that between 8,000 and 11,000 migrants are still in the territory, a figure that starkly contrasts with the government’s claim of only 2,500 remaining.
The presence of these migrants, including many unaccompanied minors, has raised humanitarian concerns.
