**Children Return to School as New Academic Year Begins**
Primary schools across Cyprus welcomed students back on Monday, marking the start of a new academic year. A total of 52,186 children entered 328 primary schools and 274 nursery schools across the island, a significant moment for families and educators alike.
Among the students, 8,919 children are stepping into primary school for the very first time, while 14,398 youngsters are attending nursery schools. This influx of students will be supported by a dedicated workforce of 5,232 primary school teachers and 1,135 nursery school teachers, all prepared to guide the children through their educational journeys.
Education Minister Athena Michaelidou addressed the students on this important day, encouraging them to embrace the school experience. She emphasized the importance of learning and personal growth, urging students to "enjoy" their time at school and "savour every experience." Michaelidou reassured the children that they have the support of their teachers and families, highlighting the shared responsibility of education among all stakeholders.
In her remarks, the Minister also acknowledged the role of teachers, with whom she has had previous disagreements regarding reforms to the hiring and evaluation systems affecting their careers. She emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue among all parties involved in education, stating that any differing opinions should not impact the well-being of the students.
As the new school year begins, the focus remains on fostering a positive and supportive environment for children, ensuring that their educational experiences are enriching and fulfilling. Michaelidou extended her best wishes to all students, particularly the first-graders embarking on their primary school journey.
