**China Proposes Economic Corridor Linking Bangladesh and Myanmar**
Beijing has unveiled plans for a new economic corridor that aims to enhance regional connectivity among China, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. This initiative was discussed during a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Friday, marking Rahman’s inaugural official visit to China.
According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the two leaders engaged in detailed discussions about the proposed corridor at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The ministry emphasized China's readiness to collaborate with Bangladesh in executing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, specifically to advance the development of the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor.
The corridor is intended to connect China's Yunnan Province with both Bangladesh and Myanmar, facilitating trade and economic development in the region. Mahdi Amin, a spokesperson for the Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed that the leaders addressed the potential of this connectivity project, which is seen as a significant step towards enhancing bilateral relations.
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched by President Xi in 2013, is a comprehensive infrastructure and economic development program aimed at improving connectivity across Asia, Africa, and Europe. It seeks to invest in various sectors, including railways, ports, highways, and energy projects, and is inspired by the historical Silk Road that once linked China to the Roman Empire.
Bangladesh has been a participant in the BRI since 2016, and during Rahman’s visit, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to fostering high-quality cooperation and achieving mutual modernization goals. The joint communique issued following their discussions highlighted the intention to elevate bilateral relations to a new level, including the establishment of a China-Bangladesh community.
In addition to the discussions on the economic corridor, a significant agreement was reached regarding the China-Bangladesh Mongla Port Economic Zone. This pact, signed during an Invest Bangladesh seminar in Beijing, is expected to bolster economic activities and enhance trade between the two countries.
The concept of a Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor was initially proposed by China in 2015 as part of the broader Belt and Road Initiative. However, the proposal faced challenges, particularly from India, which did not engage with the idea, leading to its eventual withdrawal in 2019.
The recent discussions between Xi and Rahman signal a renewed focus on regional connectivity and economic collaboration, with both leaders expressing optimism about the potential benefits of the proposed corridor for their countries and the region as a whole. As the project progresses, it could play a pivotal role in reshaping trade dynamics and fostering economic growth in South Asia.
