**China Hopes Cyprus Will Join Global Initiative to Promote Civilizational Trust**
Nicosia, Cyprus – China has expressed its support for Cyprus to take a more active role on the international stage through a global initiative aimed at fostering trust among civilizations. This statement was made by Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus, Yundong Yang, during his address at the Cyprus Forum held in Nicosia on Wednesday.
Ambassador Yang emphasized that Cyprus shares fundamental values with China, including a commitment to multilateralism and adherence to United Nations principles. He described Cyprus as having a "very important role in the region," highlighting the potential for collaboration between the two nations.
The ambassador noted that Cyprus and China are celebrating 55 years of diplomatic relations, a relationship he characterized as being built on mutual trust and support. "We support each other on issues of concern," Yang stated, reaffirming Cyprus's commitment to the One China policy. He also expressed China's commitment to supporting Cyprus's efforts to maintain its security and territorial integrity.
During his speech, Yang acknowledged the significant humanitarian role Cyprus has played, particularly in evacuations from conflict zones and providing assistance, which he said has earned the island nation international respect. He referred to Cyprus as a "safe harbour" in the Mediterranean and recognized its popularity as a tourist destination.
Regarding the global initiative introduced by China last year, Ambassador Yang expressed a desire for collaboration in its implementation. He highlighted the numerous trade opportunities that exist between the two countries, noting that China has been the "second largest import market for 17 consecutive years." With a population of 1.4 billion, including 400 million middle-income individuals, Yang described China as a promising market for Cypriot goods and services.
Yang also provided insights into China's economic growth, mentioning that imports from China had surged by 20 percent in the first five months of 2026, outpacing the growth of exports. He pointed out that China's service sector has experienced a significant boom, with a 65 percent increase over the past five years, alongside a rise in outbound tourism and the number of students studying abroad.
In addressing concerns raised by the European Union regarding Chinese investments in European infrastructure, Yang assured that China respects the security concerns of each nation. He cited the transformation of Piraeus port in Greece as a successful example of Chinese investment, which elevated the port's global ranking from 90th to 25th and enhanced its status as one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean.
"Cooperation with China does not bring negative effects," Yang asserted. "It benefits the local economy and generates employment." He underscored the potential for Cyprus to engage in fruitful partnerships with China, emphasizing the mutual benefits that could arise from such collaboration.
