**China Races to Mitigate Flood Risks from Barrier Lakes Near Nepal Border**
In the wake of a devastating flash flood that claimed hundreds of lives, Chinese authorities are urgently working to mitigate the risk of further flooding at the border crossing between Tibet and Nepal. The disaster, which occurred on Wednesday, has prompted both Nepal and China to issue warnings regarding the potential for additional flooding in the Himalayas, particularly due to the formation of two barrier lakes created by glacier debris.
On Thursday, Chinese officials mobilized an eight-member engineering team to conduct aerial surveys and 3D modeling of the barrier lakes. According to state broadcaster CCTV, the team faces significant challenges in accessing the site, where the aftermath of the glacier collapse has resulted in isolated cliffs and steep terrain.
Engineer Chen Hanxiao, part of the response team, explained that the primary strategy to address the threat posed by the lakes involves excavating a drainage channel at a lower point of the dam. However, he noted that careful calculations are necessary to determine the appropriate width and depth of the channel, taking into account the anticipated flow rate of the water and the speed at which the lake could fill.
Initial data from the engineering team's survey indicated that one of the barrier lakes measures approximately 150 meters in length and 40 to 50 meters in depth, containing an estimated 1.5 to 2 million cubic meters of water. The team’s immediate tasks include monitoring the lake's conditions, collecting data from the lake floor, and conducting weather monitoring as rainfall is expected to continue over the coming week.
The Gyirong border port area has experienced light to moderate rainfall, which has further destabilized the soil and rock in the vicinity of the precarious zone upstream. Chinese authorities have warned that approximately 3 million cubic meters of water—equivalent to about 1,200 Olympic swimming pools—are projected to flow into the dammed lake within the next three days. This influx of water poses a significant risk of a breach, with peak flow anticipated around September 1.
Aerial footage captured by a Chinese rescue team and broadcast by state media CGTN depicted the alarming accumulation of brown water in a basin with no visible outlet. The footage showed the lake already submerging local vegetation and pressing against a barrier of debris and stones.
The ongoing situation has left nearly 1,000 individuals missing on both sides of the border, including approximately 540 foreigners from 31 different countries, according to official reports. The urgency of the response efforts reflects the serious nature of the risks posed by the barrier lakes, as both countries continue to monitor the evolving conditions in the region.
As the situation develops, authorities are focused on ensuring the safety of local populations and preventing further loss of life in an area already reeling from the impact of the recent natural disaster.
