**Chinese Robot Breaks Usain Bolt's 100m World Record in Test Run**
In a remarkable display of technological advancement, a humanoid robot named Lightning, developed by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor, has set a new benchmark in sprinting by completing a 100-meter dash in just 9.32 seconds. This achievement, reported by China’s state broadcaster on Saturday, surpasses the longstanding human world record of 9.58 seconds, held by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt since 2009.
The record-breaking run took place during a preparatory test event for the second World Humanoid Robot Games, which commenced in Beijing on the same day. During its sprint, Lightning reached an impressive peak speed of 14.5 meters per second, showcasing the potential of robotics in competitive environments.
This milestone is part of a broader initiative by China to position humanoid robots as a key component of its emerging industries. Policymakers and businesses in the country are investing heavily in advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics, aiming to enhance their applications in various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, and consumer services.
In addition to its recent sprinting success, Lightning has previously demonstrated its capabilities by winning the 21-kilometer Beijing half marathon in April, finishing in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This performance was notably faster than the elite men's human world-record pace, further emphasizing the robot's potential in endurance events as well.
The humanoid robot stands at 169 centimeters tall, with its legs measuring 95 centimeters during the half marathon. In preparation for the World Humanoid Robot Games, researchers have since extended Lightning's legs by an additional 10 centimeters, bringing them to a total length of 1.05 meters. This modification is expected to enhance its performance in various athletic competitions.
