For Nicosia and Athens, the meeting is an opportunity to check for any shift in Cairo’s position following the warming of its relations with Ankara. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke by phone with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, 24 hours before the El Alamein meeting, according to a post by Egypt’s foreign ministry on X. The call included an exchange of views on regional issues, and the next Turkey-Egypt strategic cooperation council will be held in Ankara. The timing of the meeting is particularly significant, government sources who spoke to Phileleftheros said. They noted that the trilateral summit comes after a period of intense regional activity, particularly following the signing of a joint defence agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan in Mecca. On the Cyprus side, the sources said particular importance is attached to the fact that Egypt is choosing to actively reaffirm the strategic importance it places on its relations with Cyprus and Greece, even as Cairo develops its ties with Ankara in parallel. They added that the joint appearance of the three leaders in El Alamein will send a message of continuity, autonomy and resilience for the trilateral framework, and that maintaining this close relationship with Egypt is taking on even greater importance for the Republic of Cyprus in light of wider geopolitical developments and the need for cooperation mechanisms in the Eastern Mediterranean to remain active and credible. Nicosia’s position is that parallel regional partnerships neither cancel out nor downgrade the strategic relationship between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece. Cooperation between the three countries Trilateral cooperation between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece is one of the most established regional cooperation frameworks. The first summit was held in Cairo in 2014, and a stable framework of cooperation has since developed at the level of leaders, ministers and technical teams. The El Alamein meeting does not replace the regular Trilateral Summit. It is a shorter strategic discussion, aimed mainly at exchanging assessments on regional developments. The 11th Trilateral Summit is scheduled to take place in Cyprus alongside the third Intergovernmental Summit between Cyprus and Egypt, which is expected to give further momentum to both bilateral and trilateral relations. For the Republic of Cyprus, particular importance is attached to an expected positive reference to the Cyprus problem, as well as a reaffirmation of regional cooperation based on international law. Defence and foreign ministers to follow The sixth Trilateral Meeting of the defence ministers of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt will take place in Cairo on September 21-22, the first such meeting since 2022. The reactivation of this pillar carries particular political and symbolic significance and could further strengthen cooperation on joint exercises, training, maritime security and the exchange of assessments. A trilateral meeting of foreign ministers is also planned for September 25, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Christodoulides and al-Sisi At the bilateral level, the two presidents are expected to reaffirm the strategic character of relations between Cyprus and Egypt and discuss deepening their cooperation further. According to sources, they are expected to focus on preparations for the third Intergovernmental Summit and the 11th trilateral summit in Nicosia, on deepening political and diplomatic coordination, on continued energy cooperation, and on regional developments. A strategic relationship with depth Relations between Cyprus and Egypt are currently at one of their highest points in recent decades and have taken on a clear strategic character. Cyprus regards Egypt as one of its most important and stable partners in the Eastern Mediterranean. The relationship is not confined to specific areas of cooperation, but rests on continuous political coordination, a shared view on regional stability, and a dense network of bilateral and trilateral mechanisms. Christodoulides and al-Sisi met in Nicosia on April 24, 2026 and signed a joint declaration on the strategic partnership between Cyprus and Egypt. The declaration codified the strategic character of the relationship at the highest political level and set the framework for its further deepening. Today’s schedule Christodoulides is expected to arrive in El Alamein at around 09:30, followed immediately by a bilateral meeting with al-Sisi. He will then travel to the venue of the international air show. Shortly after 13:00, the informal trilateral meeting between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece will take place at the presidential palace, held in two rounds: the first on trilateral cooperation, the second on regional developments. Once the meeting ends, the three leaders will make statements, followed by lunch. Christodoulides’s visit to Egypt is due to conclude at 16:00. Strengthening the country’s sources of power Speaking on Monday, Christodoulides said all of the government’s moves aim to “strengthen the power factors of our country,” both internal and external, which he said also helps the wider effort to resolve the Cyprus problem. He said a trilateral meeting of defence ministers with Egypt would take place very soon, to be followed by one for foreign ministers, after which Cyprus would host the official trilateral meeting. He added that, alongside these efforts, the government had made important announcements on Sunday regarding child benefit, as part of a wider push – which began with tax reform and continues with pension reform, among other measures – to increase citizens’ disposable income. He also referred to security, saying the government was continuing a dialogue to stand by Cyprus’s producers, describing this as a good year overall while acknowledging the problems caused by foot-and-mouth disease. He also referred to Thursday’s visit by the President of Israel, saying there was considerable activity linked to developments in the region.
