Based on developments so far, it seems impossible that even some of the deliverables the UN Secretary-General has asked for will be ready in time. Beyond Erhurman’s public statements, the Turkish Cypriot side has shown no sign of softening its negative stance or moving in step with Christodoulides towards a positive outcome. In his own statements, Erhurman has tried to shift the agenda António Guterres set out during his visit to the island, presenting his own priorities as though they were what the Secretary-General had put to the two sides. Attention will now turn to New York, where Guterres is due to meet all the parties involved. Christodoulides will meet the Secretary-General during the High-Level Week, on Thursday, September 24. The Guterres-Erhurman meeting is expected once the High-Level Week ends, either on the afternoon of September 25 or the morning of September 26. Maria Angela Holguín, the Secretary-General’s personal envoy, will also be in New York, following a recent health issue, and is planning her own round of contacts with the parties involved. She is expected to meet both negotiators. She will also seek a joint meeting with the two leaders, though the prospects for that look remote. A joint meeting involving the Secretary-General himself, alongside Christodoulides and Erhurman, is another possibility, but nothing so far points to one taking place. Erhurman has said the only meeting he has scheduled is his own, one on one with Guterres. Beyond the intentions of the two sides in Cyprus, there is also interest in the UN’s own next steps, with attention turning to the convergences document the UN has undertaken to prepare. Nicosia has not ruled out the document being presented during Holguín’s contacts in New York, though there is no clear indication of this yet. The document is considered an important step on which talks could build, both between the two sides and with the guarantor powers. Awaiting a response from the Turkish Cypriot side Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said there is scope for concrete progress on the Cyprus problem ahead of the New York meeting, noting that the Greek Cypriot side has accepted the UN Secretary-General’s seven-point proposal and expects a constructive response from the Turkish Cypriot side too. Speaking on CyBC, Letymbiotis also addressed the opening of new crossing points, recalling the Greek Cypriot side’s April 2015 proposal covering areas the UN has recorded. He said the government is in contact with Holguín and expressed hope that the two leaders’ presence in New York at the same time would offer a chance for further talks and progress on the Cyprus problem. Asked about applications for Cypriot citizenship for children of mixed marriages, he said these are examined against the criteria set out in the law, adding that the government regards the issue as a humanitarian one rather than a confidence-building measure.
