Speaking at the event hosted by the US mission, Christodoulides said the bilateral relationship had evolved from one viewed through a single prism into a broad strategic partnership underpinned by shared interests and a common vision for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East. Defence and security Christodoulides said defence and security cooperation had reached what he described as unprecedented levels. He cited the first-ever Five-Year Defence Cooperation Roadmap, signed in 2024, and a 2025 Presidential Determination authorising Cyprus’s participation in the Foreign Military Sales and Excess Defense Articles programmes as landmark developments. He also noted that Cyprus had become eligible to nominate candidates to all US service academies, with the first Cypriot admitted to the United States Naval Academy earlier this year, and that a partnership had been established between the George C. Marshall Center and the Cyprus Security and Defence Academy. Energy and investment Christodoulides said the presence of leading American companies in Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone reflected confidence in the country’s potential, and indicated that further positive announcements were expected by the end of June. He said his visit to New York, Texas, and Silicon Valley last year had paved the way for major US investments and partnerships, including initiatives involving NVIDIA and Plug and Play, with further announcements expected in the fields of innovation and advanced technologies. People-to-people ties and Visa Waiver Christodoulides said an increasing number of young Cypriots were choosing to study in the United States, deepening bonds between the two countries. He reaffirmed Cyprus’s commitment to joining the US Visa Waiver Programme to facilitate travel and strengthen connections. EU-US relations and the Cyprus problem Christodoulides said Cyprus had made strengthening EU-US relations a priority during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, describing the conclusion of the EU-US trade agreement as a demonstration of what partners could achieve together. He linked the values of freedom and self-determination celebrated at the reception to Cyprus’s own situation, saying that as a country living with the consequences of what he described as invasion and occupation, Cyprus understood the importance of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and respect for international law. He said these principles were inseparable from Cyprus’s efforts to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and EU law. Christodoulides closed by paying tribute to Ambassador Julie Davis for her contribution to the bilateral relationship and thanking Daniel Mangis for his hospitality.
