**Christodoulides Emphasizes Deterrence as a Priority for Cyprus' Defense Strategy**
Nicosia, Cyprus – President Nikos Christodoulides reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing Cyprus’ deterrent capabilities during a meeting with Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias on Thursday. This discussion took place at the presidential palace as preparations were underway for the upcoming Independence Day military parade.
Christodoulides underscored that upgrading the island's defense infrastructure is a "top priority," particularly in light of the ongoing Turkish occupation and Cyprus' strategic location in a geopolitically sensitive region. He stressed the importance of both domestic and international defense efforts, stating, “The upgrading of the deterrent capabilities of the Republic of Cyprus is a top priority.”
In his address, the president highlighted the government's plans to modernize the National Guard and enhance the island's naval and air capabilities. He noted that Cyprus would be leveraging the European Union's Safe defense funding program to support these initiatives. “The defense ministry will receive the largest increase in government spending in the 2027 budget, which includes additional funds for military equipment,” Christodoulides explained.
However, he emphasized that the effectiveness of these upgrades heavily relies on the personnel of the National Guard. The government is committed to investing in human resources to ensure that the armed forces are well-equipped and prepared to meet the challenges ahead.
The meeting also served as a platform to express gratitude towards Greece for its ongoing support. Christodoulides thanked Dendias and the Greek government for their participation in the Independence Day parade, which will feature Greek F-16 fighter jets and the participation of Greek forces with motorized units for the first time.
The presence of representatives from the United States, France, Egypt, and the United Kingdom during the parade was also highlighted by Christodoulides as a testament to Cyprus' strategy of strengthening international partnerships. This collaborative approach aims to bolster the island's defense posture and foster regional stability.
In response, Dendias reiterated Greece’s unwavering support for Cyprus. He assured that Athens would continue to stand by the island as it develops its military capabilities. “We will always be by your side as brothers, but also within the framework of our common European family,” he stated. Dendias conveyed the congratulations of the Greek government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, reaffirming Greece’s historical commitment to support Cyprus.
As Cyprus prepares for its Independence Day celebrations, the discussions between Christodoulides and Dendias reflect a broader strategy aimed at enhancing the island's security framework amidst ongoing regional tensions. The emphasis on modernization and international cooperation highlights the government's proactive approach to safeguarding national interests in a complex geopolitical landscape.
