**Cigarettes Concealed in Vehicle Roof Seized at Deryneia Crossing**
Deryneia, Cyprus – A significant seizure of smuggled tobacco products occurred on Tuesday at the Deryneia crossing, where crossing officers uncovered a stash of cigarettes cleverly hidden within the sliding roof mechanism of a vehicle.
During a routine search, officers discovered nine boxes containing 200 cigarettes each, along with 225 grams of rolling tobacco, all concealed in a compartment that had been meticulously designed for this purpose. The discovery highlights ongoing concerns regarding tobacco smuggling across borders in the region.
The tobacco products in question were found to be lacking the necessary health warnings and traceability codes, which are required to indicate their duty-free origin from Turkey. The absence of these markings raises concerns about the legality of the products and their compliance with health regulations.
Following the discovery, the vehicle was confiscated, and the driver was arrested. However, he was later released after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement amounting to €720. Additionally, arrangements were made for the return of the vehicle to the driver.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating the illegal tobacco trade, which poses risks not only to public health but also to government revenues from tobacco taxes. The Deryneia crossing, like other points of entry, remains vigilant in its efforts to prevent smuggling activities.
As the situation continues to evolve, officials are expected to enhance their monitoring and enforcement measures to deter such illegal activities in the future.
