**Civil Defence to Investigate Siren Failures During Coup Anniversary Commemoration**
In response to widespread reports of malfunctioning warning sirens during the annual commemoration of the July 15 coup anniversary, Cyprus's Civil Defence has announced an investigation into the failures that affected several municipalities. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the sirens were scheduled to sound at 8:20 AM as part of the remembrance of the coup d'état that removed Archbishop Makarios from power in 1974.
Residents in multiple areas, including Idalion and Lakatamia, reported that they did not hear the sirens, which are intended to serve as a public alert system. The lack of sound prompted dissatisfaction among local officials and residents alike, raising concerns about the reliability of the civil defence alert system.
Idalion municipality confirmed the disruption was linked to issues with the siren system, while Lakatamia also acknowledged that sirens failed to operate in parts of its jurisdiction. Local authorities expressed frustration over the recurring nature of these failures, highlighting the importance of an effective warning system for public safety.
Panayiotis Liasidis, a spokesperson for the Civil Defence, stated that the incidents would be thoroughly examined. He emphasized that all necessary preparations had been made according to established procedures, but acknowledged that problems had arisen. “Certainly, some problems occurred, all cases will be examined,” Liasidis remarked.
In light of the recent failures, the Civil Defence is currently assessing the condition of the existing siren network. Liasidis noted that a study is underway to explore the possibility of replacing the current system and enhancing coverage in areas where alerts have not been effectively reaching residents. He assured the public that the situation is being monitored closely and that measures will be implemented to rectify the issues.
“The system is being evaluated, a study is being conducted for its replacement, and we are monitoring the issue,” Liasidis added. He reiterated the commitment of the Civil Defence to review each reported failure and take appropriate action, indicating that the planned upgrades to the system are expected to provide improved coverage and reliability.
As the investigation unfolds, residents are hopeful that the Civil Defence will address the technical shortcomings that led to the siren failures, ensuring that such incidents do not recur in the future.
