Giannaki said he was informed this morning by residents passing through the area about pallets of clothing and boxes that had been abandoned at an illegal dump site nearby. He said he tried to find out what was going on and attempted to contact the Department of Environment and the company that manages recyclables in Pentakomo. “While I was doing this, the fire broke out,” he said. “That the fire is malicious, that’s a given,” Giannaki said, adding that this is what the first indications show. The fire is burning around two kilometres outside Arsos, in the area between the Arsos and Mallia communities. Giannaki said the Fire Service’s response was immediate, with ground and air units reaching the scene and working to contain and stop the fire from spreading. He told philenews that, as of 4.40pm, the fire had been contained.
