**Coral Bleaching Occurring Too Frequently for Reefs to Recover, Scientists Say**
Coral reefs around the globe are facing unprecedented challenges as bleaching events occur with alarming frequency, leaving little time for these vital ecosystems to recover. According to a recent report from the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, global coral cover is now significantly below normal levels and is at risk of irreversible decline due to pollution and rising ocean temperatures.
Coral reefs are essential to marine biodiversity, supporting approximately a quarter of all marine life. They also play a crucial role in protecting coastlines and providing food and livelihoods for millions of people worldwide. However, the increasing frequency of mass bleaching events, primarily driven by soaring ocean heat, poses a severe threat to their survival.
Historically, the interval between bleaching events could stretch for decades. However, recent data indicates that this gap has shrunk to an average of just five or six years. This alarming trend was highlighted by Manuel Gonzalez Rivero, the lead author of the report, who emphasized the urgent need for time to allow coral reefs to recover. “If we give them enough time, they have the capacity to recover,” he stated. “But we haven’t seen that amount of time being allowed. In fact, the frequency of those bleaching events has pretty much doubled.”
Coral bleaching occurs when corals expel the colorful algae that live within their tissues, which are essential for providing nutrients to the corals. While bleached corals are not dead, they become pale and vulnerable to starvation and disease. Recovery is only possible if ocean temperatures decrease, allowing the corals to regain their symbiotic algae.
The report’s release coincides with the annual Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, where regional leaders are gathering to discuss climate priorities ahead of the COP31 climate conference later this year. The findings underscore the significant impact of climate change on coral reef ecosystems, with hard coral cover reportedly shrinking by 9.5 percent below historical averages during the 2020-2024 period.
Gonzalez Rivero noted a stark change in coral cover trends since 2010, stating, “We had 40 years of coral cover around the world that had remained relatively unchanged until 2010. Since 2010 there has been a very steep change.” The report highlights the first recorded mass bleaching event in 1998, with three additional events occurring since 2010. While reefs experienced a brief recovery from 2017 to 2019, gaining 6 percent coral cover, this was nearly offset by a 6.6 percent loss from the significant bleaching event in 2016.
The latest bleaching event in 2023 has been described as the most extensive on record, affecting 77 percent of the world’s coral reef areas. Gonzalez Rivero characterized this situation as a “staircase of decline,” emphasizing the ongoing threats to coral health. With the intensification of El Niño weather patterns and ocean surface temperatures reaching a record high of 21.1 degrees Celsius (69.98°F) on August 22, the likelihood of another bleaching event occurring this year remains high.
To mitigate further losses, the report advocates for rapid cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and improved management of local threats, such as unsustainable fishing practices and excessive coastal development. David Obura, chair of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, stressed the urgency of taking action. “We must act now to halt this decline and invest in solutions that reduce pressures and build resilience,” he warned. “Delayed action risks locking in irreversible losses.”
