**Costco Tops Estimates as Inflation-Weary Shoppers Flock to Discount Offers**
Costco Wholesale has reported impressive financial results for its fourth quarter, surpassing analysts' expectations amid rising inflation that has prompted consumers to seek out its discounted offerings. The warehouse retailer announced adjusted earnings per share of $6.60, which excludes a one-time benefit of 15 cents from tariff refunds. This figure exceeded the consensus estimate of $6.53, according to data from LSEG.
The company saw its quarterly revenue increase by approximately 11% year-over-year, reaching $95.72 billion. This performance also outstripped Wall Street's forecast of $94.86 billion. Notably, total same-store sales, excluding gas and foreign exchange fluctuations, rose by 6.7%, surpassing analysts' predictions of 6.11%.
Costco's success can be attributed to its ability to attract consumers looking to manage their household budgets amidst ongoing economic pressures. The retailer's low-price bulk model, coupled with its discount gas stations, has been particularly appealing to price-sensitive shoppers. "It was another well-rounded quarter for Costco, with comparable sales growth continuing to lead its big-box peers, driven by balanced traffic and average ticket growth," noted Arun Sundaram, an analyst at CFRA.
Gasoline sales emerged as a significant contributor to Costco's revenue, with CEO Ron Vachris highlighting that the gas business had a "record year." Costco's gas stations typically offer prices below market value, a strategy that has proven effective in drawing in customers, especially as global fuel prices have surged due to geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing conflict in Iran.
During the quarter, Costco received tariff refunds totaling $184 million under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. CFO Gary Millerchip mentioned in a post-earnings call that these refunds were reinvested into pricing strategies, resulting in reductions on essential items, including meat, beverages, and various non-food products. This approach aligns with the company's commitment to providing value to its customers during challenging economic times.
Additionally, Costco has observed an increase in average basket sizes, as shoppers consolidate their purchases into fewer trips. This trend indicates that consumers are opting to stock up on groceries and essentials in one visit rather than making multiple trips to the store.
Following the earnings announcement, Costco's shares remained stable in after-hours trading. As of the close on Thursday, the stock has experienced a nearly 4% increase since the beginning of the year.
Overall, Costco's latest quarterly results reflect a strong performance driven by strategic pricing and an appealing value proposition for consumers navigating a challenging economic landscape. The retailer's ability to adapt to changing consumer behaviors and preferences will be crucial as it continues to compete in the retail sector.
