**Couple Makes Miraculous Escape from Landslide in Kerala**
Wayanad, Kerala – A couple narrowly escaped a devastating landslide that occurred during a period of heavy monsoon rains in the mountainous district of Wayanad, Kerala, on Tuesday. The landslide resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals and left nine others injured, according to local authorities.
The incident took place at a tunneling site, where several workers were trapped under the debris. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with officials reporting that six individuals remain missing. The death toll is expected to rise as recovery efforts continue.
In a remarkable turn of events, the couple, who have not been publicly identified, found themselves in the path of the landslide when a tanker lorry became caught in the debris flow. The vehicle pushed them back nearly a quarter of a mile to a nearby petrol station, providing a partial shield from the mud and rocks. When the tanker finally came to a stop, the couple emerged covered in mud but unharmed, managing to walk away from the scene.
CCTV footage capturing their escape has since gone viral, highlighting the couple’s miraculous survival. The woman recounted the harrowing experience, expressing her fear as the mud rushed toward them. "I got scared seeing the mud rushing towards us. We couldn't do anything. I somehow escaped with my husband. I have pain in my hands now," she stated.
As the region grapples with the aftermath of the landslide, a red alert has been issued, prompting authorities to evacuate nearby areas due to the ongoing heavy rainfall. Of the nine individuals hospitalized, two have been released, while seven continue to receive treatment for their injuries.
This landslide is not an isolated incident; in 2024, a catastrophic landslide in the same region claimed nearly 400 lives and left thousands homeless. The recent landslide occurred just a few kilometers from one of the sites affected by that disaster. The Indian Meteorological Department has indicated that the region is experiencing heavy rainfall linked to climate change and unplanned construction in fragile areas, which has contributed to the frequency of such natural calamities in hilly regions of India.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as rain continues to fall in the area. The Indian Meteorological Department's latest forecasts predict below-normal monsoon rainfall for the country in July, raising concerns about the potential for further landslides and other weather-related incidents.
As search and rescue efforts persist, the community remains on high alert, hoping for the safe recovery of those still missing and mourning the loss of life caused by this tragic event.
