**Crackdown on Illegal Caravans Along Larnaca Coastline Continues**
Larnaca, Cyprus - Authorities have intensified their efforts to remove illegal caravans and makeshift structures from the coastline of Larnaca, conducting a second operation on Thursday. This follows a previous enforcement action that took place just days earlier, aimed at restoring public access and preserving the natural environment along the popular beach areas.
The latest operation occurred at a beach near the former oil refinery site, where crews from the Larnaca district government and the municipality dismantled approximately nine illegal shacks and removed three caravans. The authorities emphasized that these structures had encroached upon public space, altered the natural landscape, and restricted access for the general public to the coastline.
This crackdown is part of a broader initiative that began earlier in the week, when a large-scale enforcement operation was launched at a beach adjacent to the Larnaca Nautical Club. The operation was prompted by the failure of caravan owners to comply with an ultimatum issued by Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou and local government officials. Prior to the operation, 18 caravans were recorded at the site. Following the warning, around 12 owners voluntarily removed their caravans, leaving six that were subsequently removed by district government crews using specialized transport platforms.
Authorities have indicated that administrative fines will be imposed on the owners of the remaining caravans, which must be paid before they can reclaim their vehicles. This measure is intended to deter future illegal occupation of public beaches.
