**Cyprus and Bahrain Deepen Defence and Shipping Cooperation**
Cyprus and Bahrain are actively working to enhance their collaboration in the fields of defence, shipping, and investment, according to Andreas Eliades, the Cypriot Ambassador to Bahrain. In an interview with the Bahraini newspaper Al Watan on Monday, Eliades emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between Europe and the Gulf region, particularly in light of recent regional security developments.
Eliades pointed to the increasing significance of coordinated efforts between European nations and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, especially in response to security threats posed by Iran's activities in Bahrain and other GCC states. He noted that during Cyprus's presidency of the EU Council, the country had facilitated consultations between EU member states and their regional partners to bolster security cooperation.
The ambassador highlighted the recent official visit of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides to Bahrain, which he described as a pivotal moment for bilateral relations. This visit culminated in the signing of nine agreements and memoranda of understanding that span various sectors, including defence, higher education, culture, tourism, diplomatic training, and search and rescue operations. These agreements are expected to lay the groundwork for a more robust partnership between the two nations.
Eliades also mentioned that Cyprus has established embassies in all six GCC capitals, positioning the island nation as a potential "bridge" between Europe and the Gulf. This diplomatic presence is seen as a strategic advantage that can facilitate closer cooperation across multiple domains.
Maritime security was identified as a key area for collaboration, with both Cyprus and Bahrain prioritizing the principle of freedom of navigation. This focus on maritime issues underscores the shared interests of the two countries in ensuring safe and secure shipping routes in the region.
In addition to defence and security, economic cooperation is anticipated to expand into various sectors, including financial services, fintech, technology, logistics, and tourism. Eliades expressed optimism about the potential for Cypriot businesses to gain access to the European single market through partnerships with Bahraini companies. Conversely, he noted that Bahrain could serve as a strategic base for Cypriot businesses seeking to enter Gulf markets.
The ambassador characterized the future of bilateral relations as "very promising," with the recent inauguration of the Cypriot embassy in Manama marking what he referred to as "a new chapter" in the relationship between Cyprus and Bahrain. As both nations work towards enhancing their cooperation, the emphasis on defence, shipping, and investment reflects a broader commitment to regional stability and economic growth.
