Detectives have solved 17 interconnected cases across the country as part of the sweep. The island-wide crackdown aimed to crush smuggling networks dealing in this specific narcotic and protect the public from the harmful consequences of its distribution and use. Two additional suspects remain wanted by authorities. Prosecutors have already filed 16 of the 17 cases in court, referring them to the Criminal Court for trial. All 21 defendants are currently held in custody on remand. During the investigation, detectives secured evidence against three of the detained suspects, alleging they smuggled additional quantities of opium poppy into Cyprus over the last three months. Formal charges have been brought against them. To block further imports of the drug, YKAN contacted the foreign courier company used to ship the packages containing the seized narcotics to Cyprus. Following official recommendations and subsequent security measures, the company has blocked all future shipments of these products to the island. YKAN is maintaining its intensive operations to locate and dismantle drug trafficking networks and prevent illegal substances from entering the Republic of Cyprus.
