**Cyprus Backs Closer EU-Lebanon Ties**
Nicosia, Cyprus – In a significant diplomatic move, President Nikos Christodoulides reaffirmed Cyprus’ commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Lebanon during a meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji at the presidential palace on Thursday. The discussions underscored the importance of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which Christodoulides emphasized as a priority for the Republic of Cyprus.
During the meeting, President Christodoulides highlighted the longstanding ties between Cyprus and Lebanon, expressing a strong desire to support Lebanon's efforts to strengthen its relationship with the European Union. “We insist and will achieve the start of negotiations on a comprehensive EU strategic agreement with Lebanon, as we did through our initiatives for Jordan and Egypt,” he stated, reinforcing Cyprus' role as a facilitator in regional diplomatic relations.
The President also revealed that he had engaged in discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding the advancement of EU-Lebanon relations, urging for a swift progression of the negotiation process. “Cyprus will do everything within its power to strengthen relations between the EU and Lebanon,” he assured.
Foreign Minister Raji expressed gratitude for Cyprus’ ongoing support, conveying “warm greetings” from Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. He acknowledged the positive impact of Cyprus’ initiatives, particularly after the Republic assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. “You have made your personal mark and your great influence, and it has been for the benefit of Europe and the Mediterranean. We thank you very much for what you are doing for us as Cyprus and through you as the EU,” Raji remarked.
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis later commented on the growing closeness between Cyprus and Lebanon, noting that the two nations are experiencing “the closest period they have ever had,” especially since President Aoun took office. Letymbiotis highlighted Cyprus’ consistent support for Lebanon, which has been demonstrated through practical assistance and collaborative efforts in various sectors.
Regional security was identified as a key priority for both countries. Letymbiotis stated, “We have conveyed the message that, wherever, and to the extent that our own capabilities allow, our priority is regional security, a crucial aspect of which is, of course, the security and stability of Lebanon.” This statement reflects a shared commitment to addressing regional challenges and fostering stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
