**Cyprus Climbers Raise Cancer Charity Flag in Italian Alps**
A team of 20 climbers from the Machallekide Gym recently achieved a remarkable feat by scaling two peaks in the Italian Alps, all while raising awareness for the Little Heroes children’s cancer charity. The group successfully reached an altitude of nearly 4,300 metres, where they proudly hoisted the charity's flag atop Balmenhorn and Vincent Pyramid.
The expedition, which took place under challenging conditions, involved navigating glaciers and enduring difficult weather. The climbers were led by fitness trainer George Machallekides, who expressed the profound significance of their journey. "Up there, at Balmenhorn, in front of the imposing statue of Jesus Christ, we felt even more strongly the importance of hope, strength, and freedom," he stated. These values were dedicated to children currently undergoing treatment for cancer, reinforcing the group's mission to support those in need.
Before the team's departure for Italy, the flag was presented to them by Betty Antoniadou, president of the Little Heroes foundation. The foundation expressed gratitude to Machallekides and his team for their initiative, as well as to George Fotiou for his participation and Bora Markovic for documenting the climb through photography.
Established in 2017 and officially licensed in 2021, the Little Heroes foundation aims to provide financial assistance to families with children battling cancer in Cyprus. The charity's efforts are vital in alleviating some of the burdens faced by these families during challenging times.
This climbing expedition not only showcased the team's physical endurance but also highlighted their commitment to raising awareness for a noble cause. By reaching such heights, the climbers have drawn attention to the struggles of young cancer patients and the importance of community support in their fight against the disease.
