The protest, organised by the Akrotiri Residents’ Coordinating Action Committee, will take place on Akrotiri’s main road, near the British Bases’ radio station. The movement said its participation continues its long-running involvement in the issue. Between 2001 and 2003, the Ecologists raised concerns over the PLUTO II antenna’s installation and operation, through interventions by then-MP Giorgos Perdikis and participation in protests. More recently, in a statement issued on 5 August 2026, the movement backed a mobilisation by Kourion Municipality against new plans for Merra in Akrotiri, calling for those plans to be cancelled and demanding concrete support from the Cypriot government and the European Union. The Ecologists said protecting public health and the natural environment requires transparency, scientific documentation and genuine participation by the local community. They said residents’ concerns should be met with full information and an independent assessment, one that looks at both the potential impact of new installations and the cumulative burden from what’s already in the area. The movement reaffirmed its opposition to plans for new antennas and called for the publication of the relevant technical data and environmental studies, along with the data and methods used to measure electromagnetic exposure. It said any assessment must cover the protection of residents, biodiversity and Akrotiri’s sensitive wetland ecosystems. The Ecologists also called on the Cypriot government to give concrete backing to the local community’s demands and to press for full disclosure and accountability over plans affecting the area. They also called on the movement’s members, friends and members of the public to join the peaceful protest.
