**Cyprus Celebrates Record-Breaking Success at the 20th Mediterranean Games**
Cyprus has concluded its participation in the 20th Mediterranean Games, held in Taranto, Italy, achieving a historic milestone with its most successful performance to date. The Cypriot delegation returned home with an impressive tally of 18 medals, consisting of seven gold, six silver, and five bronze, surpassing the country's previous best at the Games.
The impressive medal haul was achieved by a record delegation of 145 athletes who competed across 24 different sports. This year’s Games not only showcased the athletic prowess of Cypriot competitors but also marked a significant moment in the nation’s sporting history.
Among the standout performances was Marios Georgiou, who made headlines by securing gold in the horizontal bar and silver in the parallel bars. With these achievements, Georgiou has now amassed a total of nine medals at the Mediterranean Games, making him the most decorated athlete in Cyprus's history in this event. His four gold medals also set him apart as the first Cypriot athlete to reach this milestone.
The closing of the Mediterranean Games was celebrated with a vibrant ceremony titled "Mediterraneo in Festa," held at the Stadio Erasmo Iacovone in Taranto. This event not only marked the end of the 10-day sporting competition but also highlighted the rich cultural tapestry of the Mediterranean region. The ceremony featured performances by Rockin’1000, a collective of 260 musicians who formed what was described as a Mediterranean orchestra, delivering an hour-long program of popular rock songs.
In addition to the musical performances, the ceremony included contributions from the Orchestra of Magna Grecia and various artists from Puglia, emphasizing the cultural identity of the region and its historical connections to the Mediterranean. The involvement of the Youth Orchestra of Magna Grecia underscored the importance of cultural and educational initiatives in the area.
As the Games concluded, the Mediterranean Games flag was formally handed over to Kosovo, which will host the next edition of the event, continuing the tradition of this multi-sport competition that unites countries from across the Mediterranean.
